Development and Validation of a Short Form of the Child–Adolescent Perfectionism Scale

Abstract: The objective of the present study was to develop and assess the validity of a short form of the Child–Adolescent Perfectionism Scale (CAPS). Two Portuguese samples composed of 756 adolescents were used to cross-validate the factorial structure of a nine-item Child–Adolescent Perfectionism Scale—Short Form (CAPS–SF). The CAPS–SF consists of a four-item self-oriented perfectionism subscale and a five-item socially prescribed perfectionism subscale. Both subscales demonstrated adequate internal consistency. “…The CAPS-SF comprises two subscales measuring socially-prescribed perfectionism and self-oriented perfectionism. In a sample of 9–18-year-olds, both subscales show adequate internal consistency (Cronbach’s a = 0.84–0.86), test-retest reliability (0.67 and 0.61, p = <0.001) and structural validity (CFI = 0.975, RMSEA 0.047; Bento et al, 2020 ). In the current study both the self-oriented and socially-prescribed subscales had good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.84 and 0.88 respectively).…”

“…The study included 254 (69.7%) female and 110 (30.3%) male children and adolescents in the 10-22 age group. In this study, Child-Adolescent Perfectionism Scale-Short Form (Bento et al, 2020), Positive-Negative Perfectionism Scale (Kırdök, 2004), and Short Form of the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (Doğan & Akıncı-Çötok, 2011) were used.…”

“…In this study, it was aimed to adapt the Child-Adolescent Perfectionism Scale-Short Form (CAPS) to Turkish culture. The Child-Adolescent Perfectionism Scale developed by Flett et al (2001) was made into a short form by Bento et al (2020). It is noteworthy that the scales related to perfectionism in the literature have a high number of items.…”
