“…Moreover, among these clinical parameters, age and renal function at the time of diagnosis are well known predictors of future kidney function [10], and they also have been identified as independent predictors for renal outcomes in our study; hence, they should be considered before treatment as well. Interestingly, in the recently published AAGN study, Brix et al have reported the key predictors for ESRD are as follows: percentage of normal glomeruli, degree of interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy, and eGFR at biopsy [47]. Based on our findings, these different results by Brix et al may be related to racial difference or histopathologic composition.…”

“…Histopathological classification as defined by Berden et al was proposed to be helpful with the highest renal survival rates in the focal group and the poorest in the sclerotic group 3 4. Recently, Brix et al suggested the antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody renal risk score (ARRS) to predict ESRD in patients with AAV 5. Unlike Berden's classification, ARRS combines histopathological findings (the percentage of normal glomeruli, tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis) with baseline glomerular filtration rate (GFR).…”

“…To the editor: We were interested to read the recently published work of Brix et al, 1 which proposed a renal risk score for antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated glomerulonephritis. Brix and colleagues found that the percentage of normal glomeruli was of prime importance in predicting risk of end-stage kidney disease.…”

“…We recently studied a cohort of 102 patients from 2 large renal centers in Scotland (Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Glasgow Renal and Transplant Unit) with a confirmed histologic diagnosis of renal vasculitis since January 2013 (see Table 1 for baseline characteristics). Kidney biopsy reports blinded to clinical parameters were assigned scores as described by Brix et al 1 and combined with estimated glomerular filtration rate. This performed well at predicting 1-and 2-year renal survival in these patients (area under the curve of 0.891 and 0.892, respectively), further validating the recently published risk score.…”
