Development and Validation of a Questionnaire to Measure Serious and Common Quality of Life Issues for Patients Experiencing Small Bowel Obstructions

Abstract: A validated questionnaire to assess the impact of small bowel obstructions (SBO) on patients’ quality of life was developed and validated. The questionnaire included measurements for the impact on the patients’ quality of life in respect to diet, pain, gastrointestinal symptoms and daily life. The questionnaire was validated using 149 normal subjects. Chronbach alpha was 0.86. Test retest reliability was evaluated with 72 normal subjects, the correlation coefficient was 0.93. Discriminate validity was determin… Show more

“…It is widely accepted that the adhesions that cause SBO and symptomology in subjects are typically caused from prior abdominal or pelvic surgery [ 4 , 38 ]. The current study is the first prospective study to assess the changes in quality of life for subjects with a history of SBO treated with the CPA using the validated SBO-Q [ 30 ]. It introduces the option of using a nonsurgical approach to treat the adhesions that cause SBO in stable, nonemergency situations.…”

“…Subjects provided previous medical history and records; no diagnoses or radiological evaluations were performed as a part of the study. The QOL measures were performed in an observational manner using the validated paper based SBO Questionnaire (SBO-Q) [ 30 ]. All six domains of the SBO-Q were analyzed in this study (diet, pain, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, medication, QOL, and pain severity).…”

“…A-APRS-15 scored consistently with the obtained standard test scores ( = 0.01) ( Table 1). Content validation through experts revealed no major corrections based on a mean rating cut-off of 2.5 or higher [19]. Category function statistics revealed a positive analysis of the structural validity of the A-APRS five-point Likert scale; that is, function of assessment was acceptable as each category count was equal to or more than 10.…”

“…A rational analysis of the questionnaire was done by the experts, specifically focusing on the readability, clarity, comprehensiveness, and level of agreement using Likert scale. Three school principals were requested to rate the A-APRS-19 based on the importance of each item (4-point scale: 0 = not at all; 1 = low; 2 = somewhat; 3 = high) and also the consistency between the items (4-point scale: 0 = not at all; 1 = weak; 2 = adequate; 3 = strong) [19].…”
