An attempt was made to develop a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric (LC-MS/MS) method which is rapid, sensitive and validated for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of lutein from the Marigold petals. Linearity, specificity, sensitivity, precision, accuracy, and analyte stability were evaluated. Two multiple reaction-monitoring (MRM) transitions for each analyte were observed: 568.01 > 104.53 and 568.01 > 118.60 for lutein. The retention time of the substance was 3.22 minutes. In this study, an excellent linearity was obtained with correlation coefficient, R, higher than 0.999. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.0078 and 0.0240 ng/mL, respectively. This paper is one of the few studies on these subjects and represents the first application of advanced LC-MS/MS technology.
