Development and Validation of the Function In Sitting Test in Adults With Acute Stroke

Abstract: The 14-item FIST is reliable and valid in adults following acute stroke. Studies of intra- or intertester reliability and evaluative validity studies including applications to other patient populations with sitting balance dysfunction are now necessary.

“…Reliability of the EP-AAT was investigated by calculating Cronbach’s α for each bias-score with the individual bias-scores per picture. Internal reliability of the alcohol-appetitive bias (10 items, Cronbach’s α  = 0.38), alcohol-positive bias (10 items, Cronbach’s α  = 0.46), alcohol-negative bias (10 items, Cronbach’s α  = 0.43), appetitive bias (10 items, Cronbach’s α  = 0.44), positive bias (10 items, Cronbach’s α  = 0.20), and negative bias (10 items, Cronbach’s α  = 0.48) was fairly poor (46) but not unusual for implicit reaction time tests (47, 48). …”

“…Higher scores indicate greater levels of kinesiophobia than lower scores. The Function in Sitting Test 16 was used for this patient because of her low level of function. The Function in Sitting Test is a 14-item performance-based measure of sitting balance that requires the therapist to rank the patient on a scale of 0 (dependent) to 4 (independent) for each task.…”

“…The highest score possible is 56, indicating independence, and the lowest score is 0, indicating maximal assistance required. 16 Finally, the supine to sit item of the University of Rochester Acute Care Evaluation 17 was performed. The University of Rochester Acute Care Evaluation is a performance-based assessment that her medications or received any medical care for more than a year secondary to lack of insurance and fi nancial diffi culties.…”

“…Individuals were initially assessed sitting with and without arm support. If able, participants then performed a series of dynamic sitting balance tasks, including reaching sideways and picking up an object from behind (Gorman, Radtka, Melnick, Abrams, & Byl, 2010).…”
