Development of a BIM-based bridge maintenance system (BMS) for managing defect data

Abstract: Bridges might experience many defects during use, such as pavement cracks and reinforcement corrosion, which easily produce an accumulated impact that threatens bridge safety. Thus, there is a need for the regular inspection and maintenance of bridges. This paper presents a bridge maintenance system (BMS) based on building information modelling (BIM), which is utilized in bridge defect information management using a digitalization method. A bridge defect three-dimensional BIM (BIM3D) library is established and… Show more

“…As a result, they obtain an intermediate 3D model object with potential BIM applications, such as bridge monitoring and evaluation. Li et al [52] proposed a Bridge Maintenance System (BMS) that utilizes Building Information Modelling (BIM) to manage bridge defect information digitally. Their system was tested on the Cocodala Bridge in Xinjiang, China, and allows for visualization of bridge defects, evaluation of technical conditions, and recommendations for bridge maintenance methods.…”

“…In order to effectively utilize the large amount of historical detection data accumulated in bridge maintenance management and realize data mining of bridge maintenance information, it is necessary to establish a bridge maintenance stage status information database as the basis for data [9,10]. The data in the database should be strictly standardized, versatile, and easy to mine.…”

“…The use of BIM models in operation focuses on their use for maintenance management [13,14], such as building inspection [15,16], monitoring [17,18] and diagnostics [19,20]. Initial approaches to implementing digital twins in the operation of bridge structures also exist [21][22][23].…”
