Development of a Circularly Polarized Hmsiw Antenna

Abstract: A circularly polarized (CP) half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) cavitybacked antenna is developed by a novel design method in this paper. The single-fed antenna contains two coupled HMSIW cavities with orthogonal polarizations. Its design method evolves from filter synthesis procedure, which takes the advantage of equivalent circuit model to accelerate the optimization. The antenna radiates high-purity right handed CP waves with measured axial ratio (AR) of 0.33 dB at 3.55 GHz, while its gain and … Show more

“…However, these antennas have a drawback of large cavity size. Half-mode (HM) and quarter-mode (QM) cavity antennas are investigated in [7][8][9][10]. Though compact size is obtained, only an antenna element can be formed in these SIW cavities.…”

“…Especially, fraction‐mode SIW cavities provide a conceptual route for antenna miniaturization. By cutting a full‐mode (FM) cavity along symmetry planes (ie, A‐A′, B‐B′, C‐C′, and D‐D′), half modes (HMs), 4,5 quarter modes (QMs), 6,7 and even eighth modes (EMs) 8,9 can be constructed, as shown in Figure 1. Compared with the former, their requisite size is largely reduced and comparable performance such as the field distribution and resonating frequency is preserved.…”

“…Over the years, some excellent designs based on HM SIW cavities have been proposed. A low‐profile antenna with a coaxial feeding is reported in [2 ]. However, only a radiating band can be realised, which inevitably increases the quantity of required antennas for multi‐standard wireless applications.…”
