We present i-Light, a cyber-physical platform that aims to help older adults to live safely within their own homes. The system is the result of an international research project funded by the European Union and is comprised of a custom developed wireless sensor network together with software services that provide continuous monitoring, reporting and real-time alerting capabilities. The principal innovation proposed within the project regards implementation of the hardware components in the form of intelligent luminaires with inbuilt sensing and communication capabilities. Custom luminaires provide indoor localisation and environment sensing, are cost-effective and are designed to replace the lighting infrastructure of the deployment location without prior mapping or fingerprinting. We evaluate the system within a home and show that it achieves localisation accuracy sufficient for room-level detection. We present the communication infrastructure, and detail how the software services can be configured and used for visualisation, reporting and real-time alerting.

The Internet of Things (IoT) offers opportunities for new applications and services that enable users to access and control their working and home environment from local and remote locations, aiming to perform daily life activities in an easy way. However, the IoT also introduces new challenges, some of which arise from the large range of devices currently available and the heterogeneous interfaces provided for their control. The control and management of this variety of devices and interfaces represent a new challenge for non-expert users, instead of making their life easier. Based on this understanding, in this work we present a natural language interface for the IoT, which takes advantage of Semantic Web technologies to allow non-expert users to control their home environment through an instant messaging application in an easy and intuitive way. We conducted several experiments with a group of end users aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of our approach to control home appliances by means of natural language instructions. The evaluation results proved that without the need for technicalities, the user was able to control the home appliances in an efficient way.

In the modern society most of the devices are controlled by the remote control system. Because,in such working person may not be available to control the appliances or device manually. For an example, nuclear reactor industry and hazardous chemical gas industry are rarely used manual control system. So user can perform controlling as well as switching operation using a remote control system. In this work, "Industrial Appliances Control Using Arduino Processor" through GSM is proposed and controlling a set of electrical appliances are achieved by setting up a remote control system using arduino boards. The objective of this work is to convert the manually operated plant to fully automated plant for achieving higher accuracy, efficiency and time saving.The GSM modem can provide the necessary information about load to an user located anywhere at any time. According to data received, user will take some action by sending some commands through mobile unit to GSM modem. Based on the command, the required appliance will be triggered. It can also be used for implementation of more complex systems. Which requires more precision controlling and switching for complicated tasks like controlling different systems in nuclear plant and reactors in the industry. It is used to reduce the maintenance costs and reduces human effort.
