Development of a dynamic Chest Wall and operating table simulator to enhance congenital heart surgery simulation

Abstract: Background: The Hands-On Surgical Training in Congenital Heart Surgery (HOST-CHS) program using 3D printed heart models has received positive feedback from attendees. However, improvements were necessary in the simulator set up to replicate the ergonomics experienced in the operating room. This paper illustrates the development of a dynamic chest wall and operating table simulator to enhance the simulation experience. Methods: The simulator was designed to address the limitations with the existing set up. This… Show more

“…The optimization of HOST model design, the increased experience in the models assembly process, and the introduction of new 3D printing materials and techniques are projected to reduce the cost of HOST. 10,13 At the same time, evidence-based planning of surgical procedures to be included in HOST and understanding the need for repeated simulations and the timing of repetitions can establish a more sustainable and cost-effective HOST program.…”

“…Typically, the models are mounted on a flat platform with supporting pillars so that the platform is simply plastered on the table. A model can be mounted in a chest wall simulator that replicates the environment and ergonomics of the operating table (Figure 4) (48).…”
