Development of a mass transfer model for simulation of sulfur dioxide removal in ceramic membrane contactors

Abstract: This paper presents mass transfer simulation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) removal in a ceramic membrane contactor by means of computational fluid dynamics techniques. The membrane contactor considered here is a tubular ceramic contactor. A two‐dimensional mass transfer model was developed to describe the absorption of SO2 in N,N‐dimethylaniline as absorbent. Physical absorption was considered in this work. Computational fluid dynamics techniques were applied to solve the model equations including continuity and mom… Show more

“…oped and used due to their higher removal efficiency, no pollution loads and sometimes lower energy consumption than conventional methods [163][164][165][166][167][168][169]. These advantages help membrane processes find a wide range of applications including food and beverage industries, biotechnology, water filtration and after a while, treating wastewaters containing heavy metals [170][171][172][173][174][175][176]. Membrane processes are used in treating water and wastewater because of the simple separation method [177][178][179].…”

“…Therefore, development of an efficient and robust process for dehydration of alcohols is of vital importance for chemical and petrochemical industries. There are various candidates for this application among which membrane technology has shown to be an excellent choice for dehydration of alcohols …”

“…Most mechanistic models developed for simulation of membrane processes are based on Fick's model for estimation of diffusional mass transfer . However, Fick's model is not appropriate for multicomponent mass transport and for highly concentrated systems, because it does not account for all interactions between molecules involved during the molecular diffusion…”

“…Between membranes units, Ultrafiltration (UF) and Microfiltration (MF) are extensively used for separation purposes in the petroleum industry. Typically, polymeric membranes are employed and solvents are added to crude oil to reduce its viscosity (Rezakazemi et al, 2013b;Shirazian et al, 2012b;Shirazian et al, 2012c;Shirazian et al, 2012d). Solvent recovery following extraction, phase separation and metal removal are some examples of membrane separation in the petroleum industry.…”
