Passive sampling techniques have been developed as an alternative method for in situ integrative monitoring of trace levels of neutral pesticides in environmental waters. The objective of this work was to develop a new receiving phase for pesticides with a wide range of polarities in a single step. We describe the development of three new composite silicone rubbers, combining polydimethylsiloxane mechanical and sorption properties with solid-phase extraction sorbents, prepared as a receiving phase for passive sampling. A composite silicone rubber composed of polydimethylsiloxane/poly(divinylbenzene-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone) was selected by batch experiments for its high sorption properties for pesticides with octanol-water partition coefficients ranging from 2.3 to 5.5. We named this composite material "Polar/Apolar Composite Silicone Rubber". A structural study by scanning electron microscopy confirmed the homogeneous dispersion of the sorbent particles and the encapsulation of particles within the polydimethylsiloxane matrix. We also demonstrate that this composite material is resistant to common solvents used for the back-extraction of analytes and has a maximal resistance temperature of 350°C. Therefore, the characteristics of the "Polar/Apolar Composite Silicone Rubber" meet most of the criteria for use as a receiving phase for the passive sampling of pesticides.

Ideas and Applications Toward Sample Preparation for Food and Beverage Analysis

This chapter focuses on sample preparation procedures for pesticide analysis of food commodities, biological and environmental matrices. This will include pesticides with a broad range of polarity including those that are more amenable to gas chromatographymass spectrometry (organochlorines, organophosphorus pesticides, and pyrethroids) and those commonly analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (carbamates, azole, and strobilurin fungicides, and phenylureas as well as organophosphorus pesticides). QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) methods or QuEChERS methods with modifications to allow wetting of the dry sample matrix, buffering, changing extraction solvent from acetonitrile to ethyl acetate are examined. Subsequent cleanup using dispersive solid phase extraction or cartridge format solid phase extraction has also been completed to reduce matrix effects. Other solid matrices are frequently extracted with pressurized liquid extraction, microwave assisted extraction, or ultrasonic extraction combined with or followed by dispersive solid phase extraction or solid phase extraction. Particularly for chromatography-mass spectrometry, careful consideration of matrix effects needs to be made when considering the design of the sample preparation procedures. Selection of extraction solvent needs to consider both polarity of target analytes (and their solubility in selected solvents) as well as co-extracted matrix components.

O aumento na utilização de agrotóxicos na agricultura pode trazer graves consequências ao meio ambiente e à saúde da população, que consumir alimentos e água com resíduos de tais substâncias. Desta forma, o presente estudo buscou avaliar a presença e a concentração de agrotóxicos na água para consumo humano e, com isso, compreender os riscos à saúde que a população do município de Cachoeira do Sul está submetida. A metodologia consistiu na coleta e análise de amostras de água, em cinco épocas do ano, entre agosto de 2017 a março de 2018, sendo realizadas duas coletas de água tratada (na estação de tratamento e numa instituição de ensino) e uma de água do rio Jacuí, que abastece a cidade, sendo um total de 15 amostras. As amostras foram submetidas a análise por extração em fase sólida e cromatografia gasosa e líquida acoplada a espectrometria de massas. Os resultados mostraram a presença de resíduos de agrotóxicos em todas as amostras, com período crítico para contaminação entre fevereiro e março. No total, foram identificados 18 princípios ativos de agrotóxicos nas amostras de água, sendo o inseticida imidacloprido o de maior incidência e concentração, seguido pelos herbicidas clomazone e quincloraque. Os poluentes analisados persistiram mesmo após o tratamento da água, expondo a população aos riscos potenciais pela ingestão diária destes componentes. Medidas que promovam a remoção destes compostos na água, bem como alternativas ao modelo agrícola convencional precisam ser desenvolvidas e ampliadas, para promover a redução ou eliminação do uso dos agrotóxicos e proteção da saúde e meio ambiente.
