Development of a New Testing Approach for Decentralised Technical Sustainable Drainage Systems

Abstract: A part of the sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) are used to treat stormwater and must be tested for their hydraulic performance and the removal efficiency to assess serviceability and retention of the pollutants efficacy for in situ use. Current test procedures provide a good basis for laboratory testing SuDS on the test stand. However, the evaluation is not sufficiently representative to compare different SuDS with each other or for in situ use. The individual steps and specifications of an applied test pro… Show more

“…These investigations must include an examination of the total suspended solids retention rate. In order to facilitate this examination, an alternative test substance has been developed, which is made from real road sweepings and better represents the boundary conditions that would be present in real use [99].…”

“…To compare the hydraulic performance and pollutant removal efficiency of SQIDs, comparable test parameters and conditions must be considered, which are not available under real runoff conditions in field studies. Currently there is a testing procedure available in Germany [8] which was improved and optimized by Neupert et al [18]. Not only the testing procedure, but also the sampling strategy was improved.…”

“…In studying the affected area, measuring the risk level can be one measurement 243 method for efficiency when dealing with a new solution such as SuDS [39]. Other tech-244 niques like experimental investigations can be very expensive and hard to provide enough 245 accuracy in the SuDS topic [40]. For that reason, this study analyses the solutions through 246 a risk assessment approach.…”
