Development of a robust sulfur quantification and speciation method for SBA-15-supported sulfonic acid catalysts

Abstract: In catalytic applications of surface-modified mesoporous silica materials, distinguishing and quantifying different types of functional groups on the surface is crucial for enabling accurate evaluation of catalytic activity and possible cooperativity among mixed functional groups.

“…MCM-41 functionalization may be carried out through a direct synthesis route, which involves a one-step strategy based on co-condensation from two sources of silicas, or via postsynthesis modification. The latter approach involves the surface modification by grafting or coating (Liu et al 2009;Huang et al 2016;Wang et al 2019;Krishna et al 2018;Noda et al 2016). Several studies have described the efficiency in the insertion of acidic groups on the surface of MCM-41 for application in catalysis (Chermahini et al 2015;Díaz et al 2005;Wang et al 2017;Rossetto et al 2018;Mohino et al 2002;Debasish, Jyh-Fu Lee and Cheng 2001).…”

“…The mesoporous solids modified with MPTMS are still extensive investigated as catalysts in different processes, e.g. in esterification reactions [9][10][11] or glycerol dehydration [12], as well as they are applied for adsorption [13] or separation [14] purposes. In this particular work the esterification of acetic acid with n-hexanol was applied as a test reaction.…”

“…Several pristine strategies for the preparation of hybrid inorganic‐organic porous solids with different surface functionalities and micro and mesoporous structures with unique morphological and surface features have emerged recently . These materials with the fine control of functionalities and unique structural features fabricated through advanced nano approaches, including soft and hard templating strategie s have been making a significant impact in the field of porous hybrid nanostructures .…”
