Development of a self-reported Chronic Respiratory Questionnaire (CRQ-SR)

Abstract: Background-The Chronic Respiratory Questionnaire (CRQ) is an established measure of health status for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It has been found to be reproducible and sensitive to change, but as an interviewer led questionnaire is very time consuming to administer. A study was undertaken to develop a self-reported version of the CRQ (CRQ-SR) and to compare the results of this questionnaire with the conventional interviewer led CRQ (CRQ-IL). Methods-Fifty two patients with moderate to seve… Show more

“…There is a strong background of research in our department involving physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses and doctors. The incremental and endurance shuttle walk tests and a self-administered form of the Chronic Respiratory Disease Questionnaire were developed through projects at Glenfield Hospital [17][18][19]. We are able to recruit large numbers of subjects into clinical trials due to the size of our rehabilitation programme.…”

“…Health-related quality of life (HRQL) was measured with the physical and mental composite scores of the generic SF-12 (12-item Short Form Health Survey) (17) and the dyspnea domain of the Chronic Respiratory Questionnaire (CRQ) (18). The physical and mental composite scores of the SF-12 range from 0 to 100, where the general population scores are centered at 50; higher scores suggest higher HRQL (17,19).…”

“…The CRQ asks the patient to rate how often in the last 2 weeks has had a particular feeling or experience on a scale of 1-7, with higher ratings indicating less symptom-related impairment. The CRQ has shown good validity and high internal consistency reliability (37). Its test-retest reliability is adequate in all subscales, but its reliability is particularly high in the subscales of fatigue (r = 0.90), emotion (r = 0.93), and mastery (r = 0.91) (37).…”
