Development of a Stand-off Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (ST-LIBS) system for the analysis of complex matrices

Abstract: In the present work, we discuss the evaluation and optimization of a stand-off laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (ST-LIBS) system, developed indigenously for remote analysis of heavy elements in soil. A compact Q-switched Nd:YAG laser operating at fundamental wavelength 1064 nm was used for plasma generation at distances up to 6 meters. Techniques for optimal experimental results were evaluated for detection of Cd, Cr, Pb, Mo and Ni in soil. The system was evaluated with two NIST certified soil samples. The… Show more

“…Although the conventional wet chemistry methods can provide precise results of the material composition, their use is limited to laboratory environments. Therefore, LIBS can be effectively used as a standoff technique in nuclear plants [18], hazardous environments [19] and planetary explorations [20], for example. Xray based methods for elemental analysis is very attractive in the glass industry but they can predict bet ter results for major and minor components.…”

“…To date, the LIBS studies using a compact OMA system have mostly addressed practical applications [ 13 , 14 , 15 ]. The most important and growing application of LIBS using the compact OMA system in LIBS is for stand-off analysis [ 16 , 17 ].…”
