The Internet of Things (IoT) and its applications in industrial settings are set to bring in the fourth industrial revolution. The industrial environment consisting of high profile manufacturing plants and a variety of equipment is inherently characterized by high reflectiveness, causing significant multi-path components that affect the propagation of wireless communications—a challenge among others that needs to be resolved. This paper provides a detailed insight into Narrow-Band IoT (NB-IoT), Industrial IoT (IIoT), and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) within the context of indoor industrial environments. It presents the applications of NB-IoT for industrial settings, such as the challenges associated with these applications. Furthermore, future research directions were put forth in the areas of NB-IoT network management using self-organizing network (SON) technology, edge computing for scalability enhancement, security in NB-IoT generated data, and proposing a suitable propagation model for reliable wireless communications.

This paper presents the relevant aspects regarding the experimental implementation and performance evaluation of an Internet of things (IoT) gateway for the Modbus extension. The proposed Modbus extension specifications are extended by defining the new optimized message format, and the structure of the acquisition cycle for obtaining a deterministic temporal behavior and solutions are presented for the description of devices at the MODBUS protocol level. Three different implementations are presented, and the Modbus extension’s performance is validated regarding the efficiency in the use of the acquisition cycle time. The software and hardware processing time and the importance and effect of the various components are analyzed and evaluated. They all support the implementation of an Internet of things gateway for Modbus extension. This paper introduces solutions for the structure of the acquisition cycle to include other valuable extensions, discusses the performance of a real implementation in the form of a gateway, adds new features to the Modbus extension specification, and strengthens some of the existing ones. In accordance with the novelty and contribution of this paper to the field of local industrial networks, the results obtained in the analysis, testing, and validation of the Modbus extension protocol refer to the extending of the Modbus functions for industrial process monitoring and control management.

Neste artigo apresenta-se o uso de um microcontrolador Raspberry Pi como um conversor de protocolo Modbus para MQTT. Essa conversão permite que o Raspberry Pi se comunique com um Controlador Lógico Programável (CLP) utilizando o protocolo Modbus enquanto envia dados para um servidor MQTT. O objetivo desse sistema é permitir que uma rede industrial legada cujos dados estejam disponibilizados apenas via protocolo Modbus possa se integrar a uma rede mais moderna usando um protocolo aderente ao modelo recomendado pela Indústria 4.0 (MQTT). Este artigo discute, então, o desenvolvimento e validação de um protótipo IoT-MQTT para interfaceamento entre um Simulador Físico controlado por um CLP legado baseado em protocolo Modbus e uma infraestrutura de comunicação aberta e aderente às recomendações da Indústra 4.0, e que pode ser utilizado em uma ampla gama de aplicações industriais.
