Development of an efficient trapping system for New Zealand flower thrips, Thrips obscuratus

Abstract: Delta traps containing 6-pentyl-2H-pyran-2-one in a polyethylene bag at 2 m above the ground is the recommended method for monitoring NZFT, significantly improving the sensitivity, accuracy and labour input compared with prior methods. Long-term monitoring of NZFT could lead to more accurate economic damage thresholds and timing for when to apply insecticides. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…The lack of evidence for trap competition at one tree spacing offers little hope for mass trapping of this species with a kairomone, and potentially shows how the system can be used to screen prospective alternative lures. This negative result does not rule out other IPM strategies using the new kairomone, 31 but the sheer abundance of this highly mobile pest presents very significant challenges.…”

“…The 6‐pentyl‐2 H ‐pyran‐2‐one (96%) was obtained from Sigma‐Aldrich Chemical Company (St Louis, MO). It was dispensed into polyethylene bags (500 mg) . The catch in red delta traps was recorded in a peach orchard (‘Yumyeong’) near Lincoln, Canterbury (43.6° S, 174.48° E), over 1 week in February 2010.…”

“…6-Pentyl-2H-pyran-2-one (6-PAP) has been identified as a potent kairomone for NZFT [ 14 ]. It has been shown to double catch of NZFT in traps [ 22 ], compared with an earlier thrips lure, ethyl nicotinate [ 23 ]. Weekly trapping identified a single main flight peak in December–January [ 22 ].…”

“…It has been shown to double catch of NZFT in traps [ 22 ], compared with an earlier thrips lure, ethyl nicotinate [ 23 ]. Weekly trapping identified a single main flight peak in December–January [ 22 ]. We tested 6-PAP in a 4 × 4 array of one trap per peach orchard tree, but there was no evidence of trap competition at the spacing distance of one tree, despite catch of up to thousands of thrips per trap [ 24 ].…”
