Development of an online automatic computed radiography dose data mining program: A preliminary study

Abstract: Recent studies have reported the computed radiography (CR) dose creep problem and therefore the need to have monitoring processes in place in clinical departments. The objective of this study is to provide a better technological solution to implement a regular CR dose monitoring process.

“…The evaluation method can be either DRL or exposure index (EI). However, EI evaluation is not described in this paper due to its scope and the details can be found in our previous study [11]. DAP values of DR examinations in a chosen period can be compared against either national or local DRLs which are set in advance through the 'Settings' option noted in the second rectangle.…”

“…As the proposed online automatic DRLs management system for DR aims at providing dose monitoring function against DRLs and setting local DRLs based on evaluated results, its nature is similar to a study conducted by Ng and Sun about development of an online automatic computed radiography (CR) dose data mining program [11]. The methodology of the development of the dose data mining program is therefore adapted into this study.…”

“…The EI is the numerical parameter of the relative receptor exposure or the estimated absorbed dose to the detector and is dependent on the receptor efficiency and sensitivity to incident X‐rays . Seeram and Brennan, however, indicate that the EI is not a measure of radiation levels at the detector but rather a representation of the radiation levels at the surface of the detector achieved by converting pixel values (pixel values indicate the intensity of light photons striking the pixel).…”
