Development of API RP 2SM for Synthetic Fiber Rope Moorings

Abstract: The growth in deepwater application of synthetic fiber rope moorings has created a need for an industry design code for such mooring systems. American Petroleum Institute (API) and the DeepStar consortium took the initiative by having the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) consolidate existing design guides, joint industry research results, and industry operation experience into a new API Recommended Practice (RP) -- 2SM [Ref. 1]. This paper presents an overview on the development of this RP. … Show more

“…Guidance documents for the use and testing of synthetic ropes have been developed over the past 25 years through several prominent joint industry projects (JIPs) and testing programmes, such as the DeepStar consortium [52], Norwegian and French projects [53]. Increased condence in their use has led to safety factors being brought in-line with those specied for other mooring components.…”

“…All these disadvantages prompted engineers to fi nd a substitute material. Thus, fi bre ropes seem to be an interesting alternative once they can solve some of those problems[80,81]. Synthetic fi bre mooring ropes are lightweight (20% compared with wire rope) and more fl exible, thus being much easier to handle.…”
