Development of Essential Oil Delivery Systems by ‘Click Chemistry’ Methods: Possible Ways to Manage Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Greta Kaspute,
Bharani Dharan Arunagiri,
Rakshana Alexander
et al.

Abstract: Recently, rare diseases have received attention due to the need for improvement in diagnosed patients’ and their families’ lives. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare, severe, progressive, muscle-wasting disease. Today, the therapeutic standard for treating DMD is corticosteroids, which cause serious adverse side effects. Nutraceuticals, e.g., herbal extracts or essential oils (EOs), are possible active substances to develop new drug delivery systems to improve DMD patients’ lives. New drug delivery sys… Show more

“…In addition to the potential of the combinational approach, our exon-skipping strategy could benefit from recent advancements in delivery vectors for DMD therapeutics. Innovations such as nanoparticles [ 49 ] and click-chemistry conjugate synthesis [ 50 ] have shown significant promise in enhancing drug delivery and achieving specific tissue targeting [ 51 ]. While our current study employed vivoPMO dendrimer conjugation, exploring alternative delivery methods may further enhance the efficiency, specificity, and overall effectiveness of the treatment.…”

“…An example of a nanocarrier that illustrates this concept is the solid lipid nanoparticle, which consists of a lipid core enveloped by a surfactant monolayer. The controlled manipulation of lipid monolayers is integral to the design of such nanocarriers, ensuring that they release drugs in a manner that meets specific therapeutic requirements [12,13].…”
