Development of Fe‐, Sb‐, Bi‐ and Al‐impregnated silica catalysts using rice husk silica as a support for Friedel–Crafts benzylation of arenes

Abstract: Abstract:The milling by-product of rice, rice husk, constitutes a major waste of the agricultural industry. It is mainly used as a fuel additive for various purposes, leaving behind residual ash which is rich in silica (Biogenic silica). In the present project, rice husk silica was impregnated with Fe 3+ , Sb 3+ , Bi 3+ and Al 3+ from both their aqueous and organic solutions. The resultant catalysts were activated at 120 • C and 550 • C and used for the Friedel-Crafts benzylation of benzene using benzyl chlori… Show more

“…Cellulase treatment of the HBS pulp gave glucose, and its yield was 27.4% at a maximum. Although some innovative method might be needed to improve the yield of glucose, rice husks could be good sources of xylose obtained by preacid hydrolysis, glucose obtained by cellulase treatment of HBS pulp, HBS lignin that could be used as medicinal substances , and highly pure silica, which would be used for various silica-supported metal catalysts including Ni/SiO 2 , Cu/SiO 2 , Al/SiO 2 , and Fe/SiO 2 , from the viewpoint of biomass refinery process.…”

“…This would decrease the environmental load of the FriedelÁCrafts reaction and makes a valued addition to the reaction. With a similar objective we previously reported the use of rice husk silica in the preparation of solid acid catalysts (9).…”

“…Specifically, RH contain about 20% amorphous silica, which is an ideal raw material for the preparation of silicon-containing catalytic materials [14]. In recent years, the use of RH as a catalyst carrier has attracted extensive attention from researchers [15][16][17][18][19]. Shinde et al [17] have prepared supported metal chlorides and metal oxides by impregnating RH silica with aqueous or organic solutions of FeCl 3 , SbCl 3 , BiCl 3 , and AlCl 3 .…”

Shinde et al [17] have prepared supported metal chlorides and metal oxides by impregnating RH silica with aqueous or organic solutions of FeCl 3 , SbCl 3 , BiCl 3 , and AlCl 3 . Among them, the Sil-Fe-O-120 sample shows good catalytic activity and stability in the Friedel-Crafts benzylation of monosubstituted aromatic compounds.…”
