Development of forces around a hydrofoil appendage of a sailing boat

Abstract: Hydrofoils are adopted for many modern sailing classes both for multihulls and single hull boats. America's Cup boats have hydrofoils at their appendages (keel and/or rudder). Recently the ISAF choose the NACRA 17 class with modern designed foils as Olympic Class for the 2020 Olympic Games. These modern designed foils lift the hull out of the water, reducing the wetted surface and the resistance of the hull as well as the wave resistance of the boat and therefore they increase the speed of the boat.
