Development of Genetic Resources of Dairy Cattle Breeding in Ukraine

Abstract: At the present stage, the development of dairy farming needs to focus on increasing the livestock population with high productive indicators in the large-scale sector. In the period from 2000 to 2020, the number of cows in Ukraine decreased by 2.8 times (from 4958.3 thousand heads on 01.01.2001 to 1788.5 thousand heads on 01.01.2020), and in agricultural enterprises – by 4.2 times (from 1851.0 to 438.6 thousand heads respectively). An important factor in the growth of the large-scale sector should be the reviv… Show more

“…In a separate study conducted by O.V. Kruglyak et al (2020), the focus is specifically on a narrow area of innovation related to genetic engineering, using dairy cattle breeding in Ukraine as an example. This research delves into innovations in breeding practices aimed at increasing dairy productivity.…”

“…Currently, cattle farming should concentrate its efforts on increasing the population of highly productive cattle, since the total number of cows in Ukraine has been tending to decline. In particular, the population of cattle decreased 3.7-fold between 2020 and 2023 (from 4,958.3 thou to 1,355.2 thou individuals, respectively), while on farms it plummeted 4.7fold (from 1,851.0 to 390.4 thou individuals, respectively) (Kruglyak et al, 2020;Elfeel et al, 2022). The production system in animal farming has to be profitable and minimize ecological and social impacts, and also ensure the optimal health and wellbeing of the animals (Wathes et al, 2008).…”
