Development of Hybrid Materials Based on Chitosan, Poly(Ethylene Glycol) and Laponite® RD: Effect of Clay Concentration

Abstract: In the context of increasing interest in biomaterials with applicability in cosmetics and medicine, this research aims to obtain and characterize some hybrid materials based on chitosan (CS) (antibacterial, biocompatible, and biodegradable), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (non-toxic and prevents the adsorption of protein and cell) and Laponite® RD (Lap) (bioactive). The rheological properties of the starting dispersions were investigated and discussed related to the interactions developed between components. All … Show more

“…The peeks at 1638 and 3443 cm −1 are corresponding to the ‐OH stretching from the Si‐OH group and water bending modes. [ 26 ] The peaks of MSs and XLS can be found in the spectrum of XLS‐MSs. The intensity of the peaks at 687 and 1000 cm −1 is increased as the concentration of XLS increased.…”

“…The peaks at 2,877 and 1,422 cm -1 are attributed to the vibrations of pyranose rings, assigned to CH 2 stretching and OH/CH vibrations, respectively [31] . The peaks at 1,657 and 1,560 cm -1 are due to the C=O bending vibration of the -NHCO-group (amide I) and the N-H stretching vibration of the -NH 2 group (amide II), respectively [32,33] . The absorption band around 1,031 cm -1 is attributed to the stretching vibration of the C-O-C group in the glycosidic bond [34] .…”

“…Recently these approaches were extended to study the effect of Lap on the structure, morphology, and properties of chitosan/PEO films prepared by the solution casting method [129] . In films with Lap concentration C Lap =43.8 % a “house of cards” Lap structure with intercalated chitosan and PEO chains was revealed and these films showed the highest swelling degree of 240.7 %.The model of structure of chitosan/PEO film at different Lap concentration was proposed.…”
