Development of Needle Trap Technology for On-Site Determinations: Active and Passive Sampling

Abstract: 17This study presents a thorough evaluation of new prototypes of extended tip needle trap devices 18 (NT), as well as their application to in situ sampling of biological emissions and active/passive 19 on-site sampling of indoor air. A new NT prototype was constructed with a side hole above the 20 sorbent and an extended tip that fits inside the restriction of the narrow neck liner to increase 21 desorption efficiency.New prototype needles were initially packed with divinylbenzene particles 22 at SGE Analytica… Show more

“…These applications will be especially prominent for on-site applications [21], particularly when combined with portable GC-MS instrumentation. Additionally, such vials would prove very useful for calibration of headspace analysis, instrumentation, sorbent traps, needle traps [22], and many other techniques, as the production of standard mixtures would be readily achievable.…”

“…In this study the needle trap system incorporated into the Tridion‐9™ portable GC‐MS system was assessed for its applicability to an agricultural/chemical ecology plant–insect communication project. This unique volatile collection system was designed specifically for either dynamic or static headspace analyses (Asl‐Hariri et al, ) on an existing hand‐held portable GC‐MS system (Fig. ) (Smith et al , ).…”

“…87 Preti et al sampled the headspace of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus cultured in blood agar medium in Petri culture dishes and identified compounds specific to each species. 94 Zscheppank et al utilized a novel needle trap technique consisting of a sorbent packed needle to sample headspace of E. coli and P. aeruginosa cultured in liquid media 102 and found both organisms produced isoprene. 82 Elgaali et al utilized purge and trap and passive SPME sampling of the headspace to analyze E. coli and S. aureus.…”
