Development of Paper Substrate for Paper Spray Ms in High-Sensitivity Analysis of Biological Samples

Abstract: Paper spray (PS) has demonstrated a promising future for direct mass spectrometric analysis. In the process of PS, paper substrate has been demonstrated as a crucial factor in determining the final performance of PS-MS, and therefore much attention is paid to modification of paper substrate. In this review, we systematically introduce the development of paper substrate for PS. Various commercial and modified papers are comprehensively reviewed, and much effort is focused on some physical and chemical approache… Show more

“…A escolha do substrato do papel utilizado é extremamente importante para o desempenho geral das análises por ionização por paper spray acoplada à espectrometria de massas, pois impacta diretamente na eluição, ionização dos analitos, intensidade e duração do sinal e a sensibilidade do método (REN et al, 2013;HAN et al, 2018). Os ensaios para a otimização do tipo do papel para a análise em PS-MS foram realizados no Whatman 903…”

“…A strong hydrogen bond and van der Waals interactions would occur between the hydroxyl groups on their surfaces and polar compounds in samples, thus leading to a low elution efficiency and MS analysis sensitivity of target analytes . To weaken the related interactions, various physical and chemical strategies, including vacuum filtration, inkjet printing, dip-coating processes, , silanization, , wax-printing technology, and others, have been developed to modify the surface properties of paper substrates for PSI. Using the modified papers significantly improves the analysis sensitivity of PSI-MS at the sub-ppt level for analytes in complex samples such as whole blood, serum, and urine .…”

“…As is well-known, paper substrates have the characteristics of exibility, cost-effectiveness, lightness, and biocompatibility. These properties make paper promising for colorimetric, 16 uorescence, 17 chemiluminescence, 18 absorbance, 19 Raman spectroscopy, 20 mass spectrometry, 21 and electrochemical detection. 22 Currently, electrochemical detection has been combined with paper-based platforms following the strategies of printing, [23][24][25][26] evaporation and sputtering, 27,28 electrodeposition, 29 pencil-drawing, 30,31 drop-casting deposition, 32,33 pyrolysis, 22,34 and vacuum-ltration.…”
