Development of Polymeric Membranes Based on Quaternized Polysulfones for AMFC Applications

Abstract: A series of quaternary ammonium-functionalized polysulfones were successfully synthesized using a chloromethylation two-step method. In particular, triethylammonium and trimethylammonium polysulfone derivatives with different functionalization degrees from 60% to 150% were investigated. NMR spectroscopic techniques were used to determine the degree of functionalization of the polymers. The possibility to predict the functionalization degree by a reaction tool based on a linear regression was highlighted. Anion… Show more

“…To calculate the total amount of ions contained in the membrane, a back-titration based on the Volhard method was carried out [ 29 ]. This method was able to recognize the halides coordinated to the quaternary ammonium groups, in particular Br − and Cl − .…”

“…The sessile drop procedure was adopted employing water as a liquid with a volume drop of 2 µL dispensed with a drop rate of 0.5 µL/s on the surface of the films. The drop-shape was analysed by an ellipse fitting method [82]. For both fully dived and one-layer diving samples, the contact angle measurements were carried out on the rear side, opposite to the side where CuO deposition subsequently occurred.…”

“…The Volhardt approach was used to estimate the degree of functionalization. 10 The formation of Zn-NVP complex was a problem which may develop when resins were chloromethylated with high NVP content was done with anhydrous ZnCl 2 /THF catalyst which resulted in a change in color. This changed color did not wash away even when washed with several solvents, demonstrating the excellent stability this compound has.…”
