This paper employs the stochastic meta-frontier approach to measure technical efficiency and to investigate the effects of farm size on the technical efficiency in China's broiler sector. Empirical results show a positive association between farm size and technical efficiency in China's broiler sector. The medium and large farm sizes exhibit increases of 0.058 and 0.160, respectively, in technical efficiency scores, relative to small farms, which have a mean technical efficiency score of 0.722. Results indicate that there are significant differences in technical efficiency across regions. Technical efficiency in the southern region, which is dominated by yellow-feathered broilers, is significantly lower than that in the northern region where white-feathered broilers are the dominant species. Also, the technical efficiency scores estimated from the meta-frontier model vary substantially across farm sizes in the southern region. Increased farm size improves the technical efficiency for yellow-feathered broiler production. Dans la présenteétude, nous avons utilisé l'analyse métafrontière stochastique pour mesurer l'efficience technique et pour déterminer les effets de la taille de la ferme sur l'efficience technique du secteur du pouletà griller en Chine. Les résultats empiriques indiquent qu'il existe un lien positif entre la taille de la ferme et l'efficience technique. Les fermes de moyenne et grande taille affichent une augmentation du pointage d'efficience technique de 0,058 et de 0,160 respectivement, comparativement aux fermes de petite taille dont le pointage d'efficience technique moyen est de 0,722. Les résultats indiquent que l'efficience technique varie considérablement d'une régionà l'autre. L'efficience technique dans la région du Sud, où l'élevage du pouletà griller blanc domine, est significativement plus faible que celle de la région du Nord, où l'élevage du pouletà griller jaune domine. De plus, les pointages d'efficience technique estimésà partir du modèle de métafrontière varient considérablement dans la région du Sud.L'augmentation de la taille de la ferme améliore l'efficience technique de la production du pouletà griller jaune.

A study to determine the diseases occurrence and the effectiveness in controlling infectious disease on the small poultry producers was carried out in Poultry Production Clusters (PPC) and non-PPC in West Java Province, Indonesia. In the PPC, the farmers form a cluster in an area. Secondary and primary data were collected by using semi structured questionnaires, focus group discussions, epidemiology-related information and triangulated check on information. The results indicated education and working experiences of farmers in chicken farming were the important factors for making decisions and getting the best for raising the poultry farm. Education levels of the farmers range from 6 to 10 years and farmers' experience of poultry farming was 7 to 10 years. Farmers' efforts to prevent disease occurrence were not optimum, as prevention and disease control were part of the nucleus responsibilities. The level of diseases occurrence in both PPC and non-PPC was similar with a few variations, and mortality rate was less than 5%. The diseases frequently found in PPC were slow growth syndrome and CRD, while in non-PPC was dominated by diarrhea. It is suggested that to reduce the disease occurrence, farm workers in PPC and non-PPC should implement some basic principle of biosecurity.

Development of poultry industry that had been running in Indonesia which more emphasized in economic growth aspect, on one side has succeeded in increasing production, but on the other side it caused negative impact toward business and environmental sustainability. A new paradigm reorientation of poultry industry development was needed in terms of direction, strategy and policy. This paper aimed to study the success and the failure of poultry industry development by conventional approach, paradigm of sustainable poultry industry development, concept and implementation of integrated business partnership, and future perspective. The results of this study showed that the development of poultry industry by conventional approach had generated negative impact toward business stability and sustainability, also toward environmental sustainability. The paradigm of sustainable poultry industry development could be used as an alternative strategy in improving farmers welfare while maintaining environmental sustainability. This paradigm could work well if it was integrated with an integrated business partnership strategy from upstream to downstream. In order to support this effort, consolidation of poultry industry institutions from upstream to downstream was required, so that integration of product processes and between business people could be achieved.
