Development of span 80-tween 80 based fluid-filled organogels as a matrix for drug delivery

Abstract: Background:Organogels are defined as 3-dimensional networked structures which immobilize apolar solvents within them. These gelled formulations are gaining importance because of their ease of preparation and inherent stability with improved shelf life as compared to the ointments.Aim:Development of span 80–tween 80 mixture based organogels for the first time by fluid-filled fiber mechanism.Materials and Methods:Span 80 and tween 80 were used as surfactant and co-surfactant, respectively. The surfactant mixture… Show more

“…The temperature of the gel–sol transition was measured by incubating a glass vial filled with organogels in a water bath at temperatures ranging from 27 to 50 °C. The temperature at which the gels began to flow was determined as the gel–sol transition when the glass vials were inverted (Figure a) . In this process, the organogels undergo a transition in which their solid matrix-like structure is disrupted, resulting in a transition to a flowing state .…”

“…The temperature at which the gels began to flow was determined as the gel–sol transition when the glass vials were inverted ( Figure 8 a). 83 In this process, the organogels undergo a transition in which their solid matrix-like structure is disrupted, resulting in a transition to a flowing state. 84 This has been attributed to the disruption in the physical interactions among the gelators molecules due to the increase in the thermal energy within the organogels.…”

“…[25] Transdermal bioactive agent distribution using the tween 80 mixture-based organogels might be tested. [26] Tween 80 can be utilized in formulation to produce an efficient coating for food surfaces that are hydrophobic. The usage of 1.25% sodium alginate, 2% glycerol, 0.2% SO, and 1% span 80 in the formulation was advised as a balance between achieving maximal surface tension decrease and implementing minimal amounts of coating component.…”

“…For example, Span 80−Tween 80-based fluid-filled organogels were used as a matrix for drug delivery: ciprofloxacin, a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone, was incorporated within the organogels, and the diffusion-controlled drug release was described. 28 Also, in vitro skin permeation of neutral and pH-sensitive vesicles made with the use of Span 60 and Tween 20 surfactants as well as the assessment of the drug entrapment of ibuprofen within the vesicles were described. 29 The use of Span 60 only as a microsphere matrix was recently performed with ibuprofen− Span 60 microspheres preparation.…”

“…Thus, sorbitan esters (Span) and their ethoxylates (polyethoxylated sorbitan esters, Tween) are well-known nonionic surfactants with many applications, as emulsifiers, solubilizers, wetting agents, dispersants in pharmaceutics, and the food industry. Recently, several potential applications of this surfactant pair were taken into consideration. For example, Span 80–Tween 80-based fluid-filled organogels were used as a matrix for drug delivery: ciprofloxacin, a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone, was incorporated within the organogels, and the diffusion-controlled drug release was described .
