Little is known about colonization of remote island coasts by marine invertebrates, other than corals. The structure of hard substrata assemblages was investigated across Ascension Island's littoral zone in comparison with other sites. Arrays of acrylic panels were deployed at two sites for 2 years at Ascension Island to measure subtidal recruitment. Colonization of panels at Ascension I. was low, though space occupation, abundance and richness varied considerably. After ~1 and 2 years Ascension panels were <17 and <37% covered by fauna and each had <22 recruits and 54 recruits (per 100 cm2) respectively, amongst the lowest density of recruits reported. Recruitment rates of corals (25 m2 year−1) at Ascension I. were also similar to the lowest levels reported elsewhere (e.g. at Bermuda or Midway islands). Less dispersive animal types, e.g. cheilostome bryozoans, were poorly represented. Panels immersed in Tanzania and Scotland were >30% covered, with >76 recruits per 100 cm2 and with bryozoans well represented after 1 year. Across-littoral surveys of established macrofauna at five remote islands (Ascension I., Easter I., Azores, South Georgia and Signy I., Antarctica) revealed similar trends of a rich sublittoral and lower littoral reducing drastically up-shore; molluscs dominating abundance and species numbers, whilst polychaetes, crustaceans and echinoderms were well represented. Established sessile animals occurred patchily at a mean density of 8.26 m−2 but recruits had mortality levels >99%. Polar or remote temperate/tropical sites are typically less colonized than at non-remote, low latitudes but the lowest levels reported are at remote polar sites. Reduced colonization at Ascension island reflects remoteness.

RESUMEN.Durante el estudio del asentamiento de la langosta espinosa (Panulirus argus) sobre colectores artificiales suspendidos en la región de Santa Marta, se evaluaron los peces y otros invertebrados asociados a estos hábitats. El propósito de esta investigación fue determinar las especies de briozoos presentes en los hábitats artificiales instalados en los sectores de la bahía de Pozos Colorados, Isla Pelícano y bahía de Taganga, así como analizar los factores ecológicos de su distribución. Como resultado se encontraron diez briozoos de los cuales Alcyonidium cf. mamillatum, Bugula neritina, Bugula cf. guara, Catenicella uberrima y Aspiscellaria piscaderaensis fueron reportados por primera vez para el Caribe colombiano, y para algunos de estos se amplió su distribución en el Atlántico Occidental Tropical. Durante la época lluviosa (septiembre-noviembre) en Isla Pelícano y Pozos Colorados se registró la mayor riqueza y abundancia de briozoos, lo que estuvo probablemente relacionado con la mayor sedimentación y turbidez, en contraste con la época seca (diciembre-febrero). De otro lado, la estación de Taganga presentó valores reducidos de las variables biológicas posiblemente por sus características de aguas claras y movimiento reducido, además de escaso alimento. Los colectores artificiales funcionaron como refugios suspendidos para el asentamiento y desarrollo de estos invertebrados, y claramente son herramientas efectivas en evaluaciones ecológicas y de diversidad, así como para actividades de maricultura. First records of Phylum Bryozoa associated to artificial habitats in the Colombian CaribbeanABSTRACT. During the assessment of spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) settlement on suspended artificial collectors at Santa Marta region, the fishes and other invertebrates associated to these habitats were evaluated. The aim of this research was determine the species of bryozoans present in the artificial habitats deployed in Pozos Colorados Bay, Isla Pelícano and Taganga Bay, as well as analyse the ecological factors of their distribution. As a result, ten bryozoans species were found, from which Alcyonidium cf. mamillatum, Bugula neritina, Bugula cf. guara, Catenicella uberrima and Aspiscellaria piscaderaensis were reported for the first time in the Colombian Caribbean and for some of these, it extended their distribution to the Tropical Western Atlantic. In the rainy season (September-November) in Isla Pelícano and Pozos Colorados were recorded the highest bryozoans richness and abundance, probably related with increased sedimentation and turbidity, in contrast with the wet season (December-February). The present work aims to study the influences of depth and orientation on the distribution of macrofouling communities at shallow coastal harbour (Abu Qir Harbour, Egypt, southeast Mediterranean Sea). Fouling communities were collected for a period of one year (June 2006-May 2007) by suspended white test panels at different depths (from 0.5 m to 5.5 m) in two directions (horizontal and vertical). Panels were submerged on short-term durations of 30 days. Every panel was studied (on both sides) for species composition and abundance of fouling taxa, as well as the total biomass of the community. Data of fouling assemblages obtained were analysed using ANOVA and non-parametric tests in order to compare the variations of assemblages with season, depth and direction. In general, the abundance and biomass of fouling community were significantly related to the season and depth rather than orientation. Although comparison of fouling assemblages (for direction) between the panel surfaces were not statistically significant; the horizontal panels, in particular, support more fouling organisms.
