Developments for pulsed antihydrogen production towards direct gravitational measurement on antimatter

Abstract: A main scientific goal of the AEgIS experiment is the direct measurement of the Earth's local gravitational acceleration g on antihydrogen. The Weak Equivalence Principle is a foundation of General Relativity. It has been extensively tested with ordinary matter but very little is known about the gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter. Antihydrogen is produced in AEgIS via resonant charge-exchange reaction between cold Rydberg-excited positronium and cooled down antiprotons. The achievements fo… Show more

“…After ~20 s, ≃70% of the trapped p are cooled to sub-eV energies and are confined together with the electrons in the inner potential well. The catching and cooling procedure is typically repeated eight times, always adding the newly trapped and cooled p on top of those already stored in the p trap 61 .…”

“…Although the equivalence principal holds to a great accuracy for matter its validity for anti-matter hasn't yet acquired sufficient proof. A promising tests for the equivalence principal at CERN, namely, the AEGIS [3][6] [7] experiment propose the measurement of the Earth gravitational acceleration g of anti-hydrogen by a free fall through a moiré deflectometer, which apart from testing the equivalence principal will reveal gravitational properties of anti-matter. In quantum field theory, We know that requirement for gauge invariance prohibits a mass term in the Lagrangian volume density, Like the case of the photon field.…”
