Developments in Vibration Control of Structures and Structural Components with Magnetorheological Fluids

Abstract: Vibration isolation and control of structures subjected to different types of dynamic loads due to periodic forces, impact and shock type forces and earthquake forces is an important area in structural engineering. The structures can be machine foundations, buildings, bridges, towers, automobiles, ship structures, military tanks and aeronautical structures. Some of these devices used are elastic springs, viscoelastic dampers, viscous fluid dampers, magnetorheological dampers and friction dampers. This article … Show more

“…The chain structures increase the apparent viscosity of the fluid, causing a change from a liquid state to a solid-like state within milliseconds. The magnetic particles, under the influence of a magnetic field, form chain-shaped structures, which affects the flow limit in the MR fluid [20,21]. In recent years, significant progress has been made in understanding the effect of particle size on the rheological behavior of the material under study [22].…”

“…Magneto-rheological (MR) damper based semi-active control systems could provide the reliability of a passive system and approach the effectiveness of an active control system without requiring heavy power supply. MR dampers have the advantages of strong damping force, broad temperature range, low energy consumption, fast response and simple structure [13,14]. Therefore, MR dampers have been widely applied in vibration and shock control, high-rise building anti vibration, vehicle suspension system, precision machining and crash worthiness systems [15,16].…”
