Di-ureasil ormolytes doped with Mg2+ ionsPart 1: Morphological, thermal and electrochemical properties

Abstract: Poly(oxyethylene) (POE)/siloxane-based materials incorporating magnesium triflate (Mg(CF 3 SO 3) 2) were synthesized by the sol-gel process. The host Class II hybrid matrix (diureasil) employed is composed of a siliceous framework to which short POE chains are covalently bonded through urea linkages. Ormolytes with salt composition n (molar ratio of oxyethylene moieties per Mg 2+ ion) ranging from ! to 1 were investigated. The nanohybrid with n = 20, which is thermally stable up to 360 ºC, exhibits the highest… Show more

“…Step In agreement with the terminology adopted in previous publications [16][17][18] The xerogels with n greater than 5 were obtained as flexible transparent, monolithic films with a yellowish hue whereas the compounds with n = 1 and 0.5 were rather brittle, powdery agglomerates. The content of LiClO 4 in selected samples and other relevant information is included in Table 1.…”

“…In this study we report the synthesis of a hybrid network electrolyte, designated as a diureasil [16][17][18], which has been doped with controlled quantities of LiClO 4 . The oxyethelene segments of a commercial diamine were incorporated into a silica matrix through urea bridges to form a network with encouraging chemical, electrochemical and mechanical properties.…”

“…As expected from previous studies of similar oxyethylene/siloxane ormolytes [25,28], an increase in salt concentration causes a corresponding increase in Tg of the d-U(900) n LiClO 4 di-ureasils (Fig. 5).…”

“…However, other electrolytes based on salts such as magnesium and zinc triflate have emerged as good alternatives [5,6]. We must give emphasis to the preparation of materials incorporating Mg 2+ ions as they are of utmost interest, since these materials may find use as polymer electrolytes in advanced solid state rechargeable magnesium batteries [7][8][9][10].…”
