Diagnostic applications of microsphere-based flow cytometry: A review

Abstract: Microsphere-based flow cytometry is a highly sensitive emerging technology for specific detection and clinical analysis of antigens, antibodies, and nucleic acids of interest. In this review, studies that focused on the application of flow cytometry as a viable alternative for the investigation of infectious diseases were analyzed. Many of the studies involve research aimed at epidemiological surveillance, vaccine candidates and early diagnosis, non-infectious diseases, specifically cancer, and emphasize the s… Show more

“… 9 In addition, microsphere-based flow cytometric techniques allow detection of multiple analytes within a single low-volume sample. 25 As previously noted, it is now possible to measure mRNA and protein levels (via sequencing and mass spectrometry, respectively) from a single, unique cell. 20 However, a practical challenge rests in defining which analytes represent a host-dependent threat indicator in a way that is not agent specific.…”

“…Multiplex magnetic bead assays are widely utilized to analyze multiple substances in clinical samples. The most commonly used method among them is the Luminex assay, which combines an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with flow cytometry [72]. In this method, paramagnetic microspheres labeled with different fluorophores are conjugated to specific capture antibodies for the analytes.…”

“…When the in vitro release test of IFN-γ was used as an auxiliary detection method for bovine tuberculosis, the search for new biomarkers and new detection methods for bovine tuberculosis became a new direction for the diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis [ 55 ]. Due to its excellent characteristics of high sensitivity, high specificity, high precision, and high yield, flow cytometry is considered a new method for the detection of bovine tuberculosis [ 56 ].…”
