“…Similar and equally startling biochemical differences between schizophrenics and normals are described by Boszormenyi-Nagy and Gerty (22,23), who studied the phosphorus metabolism of hemolyzed red blood cells fortified with various substrates and factors, with and without prior incubation with insulin. No differences were noted between schizophrenics and normals on the hexokinase, aldolase, enolase, ATPase, and hexosediphosphatase reactions.…”

“…Blood phenols were elevated (432). There was a disturbance in intracellular phosphorylation of red blood cells obtained from schizophrenic patients, except those diagnosed as simple schizophrenia (84). Schizophrenic blood serum was toxic to certain cells cultured in tissue culture but not to others (160).…”

“…Boszormenyi-Nagy and Gerty 19 in 1955 described a test of the effect of insulin on the metabolism of phosphorus by erythrocytes of schizophrenics and nonschizophrenics. The test measures the difference in easily hydrolyzable phosphorus content of two equal portions of washed and hemolyzed red cells, one of which in the form of drawn whole blood had been mixed and incubated with insulin, when acting as enzymes in an incubated mixture of hexosediphosphate, -co-factors and accessory factors.…”
