“…Basically, microtitre plates were coated with 1 lag/well of purified anti-VP2 MAb (8DF 1) or purified anti-VP5 MAb (10AE12) (Ranz et al, 1992) in PBS by overnight incubation at 4 °C. After five washes, plates were incubated with AcAHSV-4.2/5-infected cell extracts diluted 1/100 in PBS for 1 h at 37 °C, washed again and incubated with serial dilutions of horse sera for 1 h at 37 °C.…”

“…There are nine distinct serotypes of AHSV, which can be distinguished in virus or serum neutralisation tests (VNT or SNT). The identity of each serotype is controlled primarily by the amino acid sequence of VP2, which contains the majority of neutralising epitopes and is the principal serotype-specific antigen of AHSV [7], [8]. Animals that survive infection by a single AHSV serotype are subsequently protected against the homologous type, although they can still be infected by the other serotypes.…”

“…Annual vaccination is with polyvalent multiserotype mouse-brain or tissue culture grown live virus vaccine. Future vaccines may use AHSV surface VP2 protein as a subunit bio-tech vaccine [24] or VP2 plasmid as a DNA vaccine. The pathogenesis and epidemiology of AHS have similarities to infection of ruminants by another important veterinary Orbivirus namely bluetongue virus (see Sheep viruses below).…”
