Diagnostic Needle Arthroscopy and Partial Medial Meniscectomy Using Small Bore Needle Arthroscopy

Abstract: As resolution and image quality improve, several potential advantages make needle arthroscopy (NA) appealing for broader therapeutic applications in the operating room. The smaller camera size and weight allow for a minimally invasive approach with smaller incisions than standard arthroscopy and decreased arthroscopic fluid use. Differences in the technology, such as a 0-degree optic and less rigid instrumentation necessitate a novel technique to accommodate thorough diagnostic arthroscopy as well as new appro… Show more

“…Moreover, persistence of a proximal and hypertrophic stump (“hourglass biceps” 4 ) into the glenohumeral joint could induce mechanical locking and discomfort. Recently, in-office needle arthroscopic diagnoses were made possible with the miniaturization of optic devices for knee and shoulder, 5 , 6 , 7 and therapeutic procedures such as partial meniscectomy also were made possible. The purpose of the present study is to assess the feasibility of in-office biceps tenotomy (IOBT) with a needle arthroscopy.…”

“…The role for small bore needle arthroscopy for both diagnostic and therapeutic applications is becoming clearer in the literature. 1 , 2 , 3 NA has been used in the diagnosis of idiopathic knee pain in the clinic setting and as a useful tool for diagnostic shoulder arthroscopy. Its advantages in terms of fluid management also have been described, possibly resulting in reduced extravasation and shorter operative times.…”

“…Needle arthroscopy (NA) has been described in the diagnostic and therapeutic evaluation of the knee, shoulder, and elbow. 1 , 2 , 3 In this Technical Note, we describe our technique for NA-assisted fixation of a coronoid fracture with an intact radial head and neck. Potential benefits and disadvantages are reviewed.…”

“…Needle arthroscopy (NAR) is used in human medicine as a diagnostic tool that has been described as an alternative to MRI for the characterization of disease severity. 7 It has been used as an outpatient procedure with patients under local anesthesia to investigate joint problems in man and horses. [7][8][9][10][11][12] The use of NAR in dogs presented with MCD has not been previously investigated.…”
