Diagnostic strategy for occult hepatitis B virus infection

Abstract: In 2008, the European Association for the study of the liver (EASL) defined occult hepatitis B virus infection (OBI) as the "presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in the liver (with detectable or undetectable HBV DNA in the serum) of individuals testing hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) negative by currently available assays". Several aspects of occult HBV infection are still poorly understood, including the definition itself and a standardized approach for laboratory-based detection, which is the purpose … Show more

“…The prevalence of chronic HBV infection and availability of resources are major determinants of the screening methods used for HBV. For example, HBsAg with anti-HBc (total) and/or NAT is used for screening in resource-rich areas with a low prevalence of chronic HBV infection (208,233). A good proportion of blood donors with occult hepatitis B virus infection have anti-HBc as the only serological marker of HBV infection (129,242).…”

“…A prevalência do VHB é definida pelos testes realizados entre os pacientes; entretanto, a aproximação diagnóstica apresenta-se inadequada, pois a descoberta da IOB requer ensaios de alta sensibilidade e especificidade, com um limite de detecção < 10 UI/mL para VHB-DNA e < 0,1 mg/mL para HBsAg 69 .…”

“…However, a qualitative assay was optimized for the detection of HBV DNA, which can be very useful for the identification of HBV occult infection, genotypes and mutants (Ocana et al, 2011;Said, 2011;Chakravarty, 2011;Guirgis et al, 2010;Valsamakis, 2007). For these reasons, the present study will be very useful for clinical studies regarding HBV diagnosis and the monitoring of HBV treatment.…”
