Diagnostic test accuracy of the Nursing Delirium Screening Scale: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Delirium is a psychiatric syndrome that presents an acute disturbance of consciousness, attention, and cognitive function, with an added characteristic of wide manifest fluctuation. With regard to clinical settings, prevalence rates reaching up to 50% are common in both hospitals and long-term care facilities (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Early detection and prompt management are known to be the keys to treatment of delirium (Rohatgi et al., 2019). Preventing or

“…Cognitive function was assessed using the Korean version of the Mini‐Mental State Examination (MMSE); scores of 17–24 indicate mild cognitive impairment and scores lower than 17 indicate dementia (total range: 0–30) 14 . The risk of postoperative delirium was evaluated using the Nursing Delirium Screening Scale, in which a score of 2 or higher implies a higher risk of postoperative delirium (total range: 0–5) 15 . Depression was evaluated using the short form of the Korean Geriatric Depression Scale, in which a score of 10 or higher suggests severe depression (total range: 0–15) 16 .…”

“…For clinical screening of delirium in patients, we chose the Nursing Delirium Screening Scale (Nu‐DESC), as sustainability is the most important criterion when choosing a delirium screening tool. The Nu‐DESC is one of the most recommended tools for delirium screening (van Velthuijsen et al, 2016), as it has good diagnostic test accuracy and feasibility for use in clinical settings owing to its short administration time (1 min) (Hosie et al, 2015; Jeong, Park, & Lee, 2020; Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, 2019). The Confusion Assessment Method (CAM), the most‐used known tool, was not utilized in this study, as it is considered to be a diagnostic tool rather than a screening tool.…”

“…Jeong ve arkadaşlarının (2020) NU-DESC'in tanısal test doğruluğunu değerlendirmek amacıyla yaptığı meta analiz çalışmasında 2.245 hastayı içeren 11 çalışma incelenmiş ve çalışma sonucuna göre Nu-DESC'in deliryumun erken dönemde saptanmasına katkıda bulunacağı ve herhangi bir hastane ortamında günlük taramada kullanılabilecek kolay ve doğrulanmış bir deliryum tarama aracı olduğu belirtilmiştir (16). Velthuijsen ve arkadaşlarının (2016) hastanede yatan yaşlı hastalarda deliryum tanılamasında kullanılan ölçeklerin psikometrik özellikleri ve uygulanabilirliğini inceledikleri sistematik derlemede, 37 çalışma incelenmiş ve 23 tarama aracı bulunmuştur.…”
