Diagnostic tools in the evaluation of patients with viral hepatitis undergoing liver transplantation

Abstract: Familiarity with the diagnostic parameters of viral hepatitis is imperative in the liver transplantation arena. Chronic viral hepatitis B and C are among the most common categories of end-stage liver disease. The preoperative diagnosis, determination of recurrent infection, and the assessment of antiviral therapeutic efficacy are dependent on appropriate virological testing. Furthermore, liver transplant personnel are at a high risk for parenterally transmitted viral hepatitis infection. Knowledge and understa… Show more

“…The ease of automation and cost-effectiveness made serologic assays the most practical tool in HCV diagnosis [21] . However, antibody detection exhibits many disadvantages including that; detection is limited during the early stages of infection, poor sensitivity (false negative) in hemodialysis patients, immunocompromised patients [22][23][24][25] , an abundance of false-positives [26] (because recovered patients may stay anti-HCV positive for years) and variability in accuracy between deferent commercial kits.…”

“…Although clearance of HBeAg is typically followed by the appearance of antibody to HBeAg (anti-HBe), its development is not invariable, may not persist and adds little diagnostically. A variety of tests, qualita-tive and quantitative, are available for HBV DNA detection (3).…”
