“…[27][28][29] In our study, CEA alone had a sensitivity of 76.5% and accuracy of 80.4%, in agreement with earlier results. 27 CEA synthesis is known to be increased by malignant cells. It has been suggested that decreased lymphatic drainage due to the obstruction of the lymphatic drainage by malignant cells and invasions may increase effusion CEA levels.…”

“…CA15-3 has previously been found in several small scale studies to be elevated in the serum (Alatas et al, 2001) and in effusions of patients with mesothelioma (Miedouge et al, 1999;Alatas et al, 2001) (Villena et al, 2003). In the current study, CA15-3 levels were significantly higher in the serum of mesothelioma patients than healthy controls; however, the finding that levels were elevated in patients with benign lung and pleural disease suggests that serum CA15-3 will not be useful as a diagnostic aid for mesothelioma.…”

“…CA 19-9 increases in pleural fluids as a result of an antigenic reaction despite an invasion of serous membranes by a few tumor cells (21). While previous studies found low sensitivity but high specificity for Ca 19-9 level in malignant pleural fluids (1,9,14,15), only Kuralay et al determined both of them at high levels (19). In the present study, we found low sensitivity and high specificity of CA 19-9 level as well.…”
