Diagnostic Yields and Clinical Impacts of Capsule Endoscopy

Abstract: Observing the entire small bowel is difficult due to the presence of complex loops and a long length. Capsule endoscopy (CE) provides a noninvasive and patient-friendly method for visualizing the small bowel and colon. Small bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) has a critical role in the diagnosis of small bowel disorders through the direct observation of the entire small bowel mucosa and is becoming the primary diagnostic tool for small bowel diseases. Recently, colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) was also considered saf… Show more

“…Of all neoplasms involving the gastrointestinal tract, small bowel tumors comprise only 1-2 percent [8]. While Ewing sarcomas typically present in the bones of older children and young adults, they can also develop in extraskeletal locations in 20-30 percent of cases [9].…”

“…SBCE has an increased DY for SBTs compared to push enteroscopy [80] but similar detection rates when compared to DAE, both in the case of SBE [81] and DBE [82]. However, for several subgroup of patients, there is a demonstrated risk of false-negative SBCE results, such as for submucosal mass with minimal luminal expression or for those lesions proximally located in the small bowel [83]. For these reasons, when SBTs are suspected, cross-sectional small bowel imaging must follow a negative examination.…”

“…Capsule endoscopy (CE) is considered a safe and widely accepted first-line method for investigating the small bowel (SB) due to its noninvasive and patient-friendly benefits ( 1 ). Recently, CE has been introduced for colon investigations and is considered an alternative to colonoscopy in specific clinical circumstances, with a high success rate, low complication rates and patient preference ( 2 ).…”
