Diallel Analysis for Lycopene Content in the Hybrids Derived from Different Colored Parents in Tomato

Abstract: Lycopene is a red pigment in tomato with purported antioxidant properties. As the amount of lycopene has been reported to differ in different colored tomatoes or even absent in non-red tomatoes, the objective of this study was to investigate the inheritance of lycopene content and the color parameters of hybrids using a 10 parent diallel excluding reciprocals. Parents differed in general combining ability (GCA) for lycopene and color parameters. "Chocolate Stripe" (purple and brown striped) had the highest lyc… Show more

“…Out of 28 hybrids, highest lycopene content was recorded for CHFT-70 x CHFT-50 (21.36 mg/100g) followed by DVRT-1 x CHFT-50 (15.13 mg/100g) and DVRT-2 x CHFT-71 (14.61 mg/100g). The findings are in accordance with Panthee et al, (2015). The β-carotene content ranged from 0.91 to 3.25 mg/100g and 0.67 to 3.62 mg/100g in parents and F 1 hybrids, respectively.…”

“…Due to increasing popularity of F 1 hybrids in tomato, it is need to obtain such hybrids that have excellent qualities and yield together with resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. The F 1 hybrids and their parents for yield related traits were also evaluated by Chattopadhyay et al, (2013); Jindal et al, (2015); Panthee et al, (2015); Lekshmi and Celine (2015) and Pandey et al, (2016). The major objectives are (1) to study the genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for yield and yield components and (2) to develop parents and hybrids having high yield along with earliness and quality traits.…”

“…The nutraceutical properties of tomato fruit have industrialized the processing of tomatoes; commonly, tomatoes are processed as juice, ketchup, paste and sauce [21]. These biochemical aspects of the tomato fruit have become an important goal of tomato breeding programs [22,23].…”

“…Tomato breeding is an environment friendly and sustainable method in agriculture biofortification methods, hence making the efforts for increasing tomato lycopene content to be possible. Diallel cross has proven in lycopene content increase from red and yellow colored tomatoes, where a number of high lycopene tomato parents were used as both male and female parents (Panthee, Veazie, Anderson, & Ibrahem, 2015).…”

“…Although requiring more manpower in order to do so, the mentioned method is easy, efficient, and has its own analysis that can show the occurred character inheritance (Souza, Meagz, Melo, & Melo, 2012). Panthee et al (2015) in their research stated that the cross combination between 08133 -1 (×)-7W, a yellow tomato genotype and black tomato Chocolate Stripe produced fruits with lycopene content of 62.5 mg g -1 . The lycopene content of high lycopene tomato parents used, Chocolate Stripe and 08133 -1 (×)-7W were 74.9 5 mg g -1 and 13.0 mg g -1 respectively.…”
