This study aimed to estimate the combining ability and gene action for eight flax genotypes under sandy soil conditions. This was achieved via evaluating the eight parents and their 16 F1, s progenies. The eight parents consisting of four females (P1= S.541-C/6, P2= S.402/1, P3= S.813, and P4= S.997) and four males (P5= Sakha 3, P6= S.541-C/7, P7= Sozana and P8= S.541-D/4). In 2013/14 season, each of the four male parents was crossed to the four female parents to obtain 16 F1 crosses at the breeding nursery of Fiber Crops Res. Section, ARC at Giza. In 2014/15 season, the parents and their 16 F1,s seeds were evaluated in Ismailia Exp. Station, Ismailia Governorate. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications.The collected data indicated that the values of additive and dominance as well as, the ratio of GCA/SCA indicated that additive played greater role than nonadditive gene effects in the inheritance of straw yield per plant, plant height, technical stem length, no. of basal branches and 1000-seed weight. Therefore, selection should be possible within the F2 and subsequent populations for these characters. On the other hand, the ratio of GCA/SCA revealed that non-additive played greater role than additive gene effects in the inheritance of seed weight per plant, no. of capsules per plant and no. of seeds per capsule. P1 and P5 among parents were outstanding as they showed significant desirable combining ability for straw yield per plant and in most important components as well as P5 for technical stem length and P8 for both straw yield per plant and no. of basal branches per plant. On the other hand, P1 and P8 among parents are good general combiners for seed yield and most of its components, indicating that the use of these parents in flax breeding programs could be increase the above mentioned treats. Only one cross (P4xP5) exhibited significant positive SCA effects for straw yield and its components as well as this cross included high x low general combiner parents for straw yield per plant and two important components, plant height and technical stem length. Also, one cross (P1xP5) for both plant height and technical stem length, in addition one cross (P1xP6) for both straw yield/plant and plant height included high x high general combiner parents. For seed yield, three crosses (P1xP5, P1xP6 and P4xP8) exhibited significant positive SCA effects for seed yield per plant and no. of capsules per plant as well as high x low general combiner parents. Also, three crosses (P1xP5, P1xP7 and P4xP8) exhibited significant positive SCA effects for no. of seeds per capsule included high x low general combiner parents. While, out of the previous crosses, three crosses (P1xP5, P1xP6 and P4xP8) only included high x high general combiner parents for 1000-seed weight. Linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) is becoming more important due to its unique nutrient profile and a source of high‐added value raw material, for both food and industrial uses. However, low productivity and lack of combined quality traits has limited its cultivation and there is an urgent need to develop improved varieties through genetic recombination of traits. In this respect 96 linseed F4 families, derived from eight contrasting parents were field evaluated during 2019–2020. A reasonable diversity among the F4 families indicated a considerable potential for improving linseed for agronomic and quality traits. Results demonstrated that strict selection for oil content, protein content, fatty acid composition and amino acid profile, with comparatively high heritability and genetic advance, is feasible and successful in F4 generation. Families with linolenic acid content as low as 9.26% and as high as 72.46% were identified. Yellow‐seeded families had higher values of phenological traits, plant height and number of capsules and lower values of seed number, linolenic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, aspartic acid, leucine and lysine content than the brown‐seeded types. Among the many low linolenic acid families identified those with superior yield and quality traits, offer opportunitiesfor development of new varieties that may be of high value in food industry. Also the high linolenic acid and high oil content families recognized may have genetic potentials for development of new varieties of linseed for industrial purposes. Among the parental genotypes four were found to be promising for developing superior high yielding linseeds with high quality.

In this study, eight Flax genotypes ( Linum usitatissimum L.) and their half diallel crosses were used to estimate the combining ability and its general and specific effects for parents. The parents planted their twenty-eight hybrids at the research station of the Field Crops Department of the College of Agriculture - Tikrit University in the 2019-2020 season. In mid-November, the complete random sector design was used with three replications. to study the traits the duration to 50% flowering, plant height, number of vegetative branches, number of plant capsules, number of seeds per capsule, seeds yield by plant and weight 1000 seeds, average leaf weight, biological yield, leaf percentage, seed yield, and harvest index. The results showed by analyzing the second method of Griffing (b1956), the static model, That the percentage between the components of the combining ability general to the specific was greater than the correct one in the traits, duration to 50% flowering, plant height, duration to maturity, number of seeds per capsule, number of capsules per plant, weight of 1000 seeds and average weight of leaves, while the percentage was less than the correct one in the traits of the number of vegetative branches. Plant seed yield, leaf percentage, biological yield, seed yield, harvest index and that the best parents were significantly desirable due to the effect of their general combining ability to mix the parent (Sakha 2) and the traits of the number of vegetative branches, the number of capsules per plant, the seed yield per plant, the average leaf weight, the total seed yield, and the parent (Giza 8) for plant height, number of capsules per plant, average leaf weight, biological yield, and total seed yield and that the highest hybrids were significantly desirable for the effects of the special combining ability in the hybrid (Sakha 2 × Syrian), the trait of the number of capsules per plant, the number of seeds per capsule, the weight of 1000 seeds, the yield of seeds per plant, the total seed yield and the harvest index, The values of the dominant genetic variance were higher than the additional genetic variance in all traits except for plant height, duration to maturity, and number of seeds per plant, indicating the importance of the dominant gene action in controlling these traits. The values of the broad sense heritability were high in traits, duration to 50% flowering, number of capsules by plants, yield of seeds by plants, weight of 1000 seeds, seed yield and harvest index, The average for the traits was plant height, duration to maturity, average leaf weight and biological yield, and a narrow sense heritability was the average for the traits of the duration to 50% flowering, plant height, duration to maturity, number of capsules per plant, weight of 1000 seeds, average leaf weight. Regarding the average of the degree of dominance, it is noted that the duration to 50% flowering, the number of capsules by the plant, the yield of the seeds by the plant, the weight of 1000 seeds, the average leaf weight, the biological yield, the percentage of the leaves, the seed yield and the harvest index, were greater than the correct one, which indicates the existence of suppression segregates with the importance of the Dominant gene action. When estimating the genetic improvement as a percentage of the general average for each traits, it becomes clear that it was low for to most the studied traits except for the number of capsules in the plant.
