Abstract

Antibiotic-induced diarrhea and probiotic: a marriage of little clinical utility. The results of an RCT The use of probiotics for the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) is an intervention of questionable efficacy. This blinded randomized controlled trial carried out on more than 300 children between 2018 and 2021 with a multi-species probiotic did not demonstrate a reduction in the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea when outcomes were analysed according to the strictest definition. It also highlighted that how AAD is defined has a significant effect on clinical trial outcomes and interpretation.
