Dibutyl phthalate, a secondary metabolite from Mimusops elengi

Abstract: Mimusops elengi, commonly called Bakul, is a medicinal plant belonging to the family Sapotaceae. It is a small to large evergreen tree up to 15 m in height. All parts of the tree have medicinal properties. The bark, flowers, and fruits are acrid, astringent, cooling, and anthelmintic [1]. “…Research indicates that dibutyl phthalate has antimicrobial and algicidal activities (Bie et al, 2012). In recent years there has been much controversy about phthalates in plants, Ruikar et al, (2011) and Khatiwora et al, (2012) mentioned that phthalates belongs to the secondary metabolites of as Mimusops elengi and Ipomoea carnea respectively. One of the fraction isolated from Oreosyce africana Hook.…”

“…These fractions were mixed together and rechromatographed using toluene and ethyl acetate (90:10), again fractionated using hexane and ethyl acetate with increasing percentage of ethyl acetate to obtain impure dibutyl phthalate. 16 Dibutyl phthalate was cold extracted with ethyl acetate and eluted with hexane and ethyl acetate (9.5:0.5) from the stem of Ipomoea carnea. 17 Essential oil of flowers in Leea indica was obtained by hydro-distillation and re-extracted with diethyl ether and dried over anhydrous Na 2 SO 4 .…”
