Abstract:We define combinatorial principles which unify and extend the classical results of Steinhaus and Piccard on the existence of interior points in the distance set. Thus the measure and category versions are derived from one topological theorem on interior points applied to the usual topology and the density topology on the line. Likewise we unify the subgroup theorem by reference to a Ramsey property. A combinatorial form of Ostrowski's theorem (that a bounded additive function is linear) permits the deduction o… Show more

“…We summarize from [BinO7] the combinatorial framework needed here: Baire and measurable cases are handled together by working bi-topologically, using the Euclidean topology in the Baire case (the primary case) and the density topology in the measure case; see [BinO2], [BinO5], [BinO4]. We work in the a¢ ne group Af f acting on (R; +) using the notation n (t) = c n t + z n ; where c n !…”
We examine various related instances of automatic properties of functions -that is, cases where a weaker property necessarily implies a stronger one under suitable side-conditions, e.g. connecting geometric and combinatorial features of their domains. The side-conditions offer a common approach to (mid-point) convex, subadditive and regularly varying functions (the latter by way of the uniform convergence theorem). We consider generic properties of the domain sets in the side-conditions -properties that hold typically, or off a small exceptional set. The genericity aspects develop earlier work of Kestelman [Kes] and of Borwein and Ditor [BoDi]. The paper includes proofs of three new analytic automaticity theorems announced in [BOst7].
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
