Abstract: The Late Triassic (Norian Bhaetian) carbonate sediments in the Northern Limestone Alps are spread between two large facies of a shelf. To the southeast the Dachsteinkalk-Formation in the Norian and t~haetian shows a thick series of shallow-water limestones, to which reef complexes are marginally annexed. Between the Dachstein-limestones the Hallst~itter Formation was deposited in single, shallow basins, showing limestones and marls of little thickness. The Hauptdolomit Formation, following to the north and to … Show more

“…This interpretation is compatible with the radiometric ages of the co-alpine metamorphic event dated by Kralik et al (1987a;1987b) around 1 3 5 -1 5 0 M y . The picture of a local palaeogeographic interfingering between the Tirolikuta and the Juvavikum as developed in the last few decades by several workers (Zankl, 1967;Brandner, 1984;Mandl, 1984;Tollmann, 1985) has to be questioned in the light of the CAI data and its implications.…”

“…In the Northern Calcareous Alps the thick-bedded or massive platform limestone were named by Simony (1847) (Zankl 1967;Bosellini and Hardie 1985;Pomoni-Papaionnou et al 1986;Dimitriević and Dimitrijević 1991;Ogorelec and Rothe 1992;Ogorelec and Buser 1996;Michalik 1980Michalik , 1993Haas and Budai 1995;Gawlick et al 1999;Mandl 2000;Haas 2004;Haas et al 2007;Pomoni-Papaioannou and Kostopoulou 2008). Although the formal lithostratigraphic names of these formations are different, one can refer to them collectively as Dachstein-type platform carbonates (Haas 2004).…”
