Diet and dental caries - a review

Abstract: THREE RECENT NATIONAL surveys have emphasised the extremely high prevalence of dental caries in Britain (Gray et aL, 1970;Todd & Whitworth, 1974;Todd, 1975). F#.>r example, 71 per cent of five-year-old children have teeth that are decayed or that have been filled or extracted; in eight-year-olds the figure is 91 per cent and in 15-year-olds 97 per cent. The average number of affected teeth in five-year-olds is 3.4, in eight-year-olds 5.0, and in 15-year-olds 8.4. No less than 37 per cent of the adult populatio… Show more

“…A slight or moderate improvement, however, can only have a limited cariostatic effect, and its main benefit certainly is improving gingival health. This was already evident from the analysis of Andlaw [1978]. The problem was reassessed by Bellini et al [1981], who stated that 'the remarkable caries preventive effect obtained by professional tooth cleaning contrasts the moderate and variable results by self-performed oral hygiene' and 'the effect of selfperformed oral hygiene has been demonstrated mainly on free smooth surfaces and on front teeth'.…”

“…Studies involving the plaque index and caries lesions have presented controversial results. 1,15 It seems that dental caries prevention is more related to the widespread use of fluoride toothpastes than to plaque removal. 3 On the other hand, there was a significant association between the presence of abundant visible plaque on the occlusal surfaces of first permanent molars and the presence of active caries lesions in these teeth.…”

“…It is now generally accepted that sucrose exerts its major cariogenic action when it is frequently taken between meals in the form of beverages, candies, chewing gum and snacks [Andlaw, 1977; Hardes and Leach, 1975; Newbrun and Frostell, 1978]. Al though the evidence to support the cari ogenic action of sucrose under these cir cumstances is almost irrefutable, it is con sidered unrealistic to effectively change the dietary habits of children [Jenkins, 1966].…”
