Dietary patterns and ethnicity are associated with distinct plasma proteomic groups

Abstract: Plasma proteomic groups differ between young adults of diverse ethnocultural groups with different dietary habits. These differences may partly account for different rates of cardiometabolic disease later in life.

“…On the basis of the present findings, studies exploiting selected reaction monitoring (SRM) are currently in progress to validate these putative biomarkers of development of b-cell autoimmunity. As a pertinent example of the application of this methodology, García-Bailo et al (50) applied SRM protocols on the scale of 1,000 individuals to quantify a similar panel of plasma proteins. Our future goal is to investigate the extent to which we can improve the detection of disease activity and the prediction of type 1 diabetes through the detection of a selected set of serum protein targets by SRM together with other parameters, such as autoantibody status and other analytes identified from our ongoing omics studies.…”

“…However, validation of candidate biomarkers has lagged far behind their discovery, presenting a roadblock to the development of new diagnostic assays. Addressing the dilemma of biomarker validation for clinical use has been a purported goal in the field of proteomics over the past decade, yet in our informal literature surveys we could find only 3 publications in which specific proteins were measured by use of selected reaction-monitoring assays in more than 1000 patient samples (3)(4)(5).…”

“…Participants were classified as Caucasian (n = 702), East Asian (n = 536), or South Asian (n = 165) based on self-reported ancestry, as described previously. 32 Participants were grouped by season based on the date when they provided blood: winter (December, January, February), spring (March, April, May), summer ( June, July, August), and autumn (September, October, November).…”
